Dick’s Sporting Goods pulling guns from 125 stores
Dick’s Sporting Goods announced Tuesday that it will stop selling firearms at dozens of its stores.
CEO Ed Stack said on an earnings call that the store will remove guns and hunting gear from 125 of its 729 stores nationwide, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Dick’s will replace those items with other sports gear and outdoor recreation equipment, according to the report.
The sporting goods chain tightened its firearm sale policies last year when it stopped selling all assault-style weapons and refused to sell guns to people under the age of 21.
{mosads}It was one of the first stores to make a major policy change in the wake of the Parkland, Fla., high school shooting.
“Based on what’s happened, and looking at those kids and those parents, it moved us all unimaginably and to think about the loss and the grief that those kids and those parents had, we said, we need to do something,” Stack said at the time.
Stack said on the earnings call that Dick’s tested the new gun-free model in 10 stores in recent months and will expand it to markets where the hunting category underperforms. Those stores saw positive sales in the most recent quarter.
The company’s same-store sales declined overall in the fiscal year that ended last month, but its stock has increased 10 percent since making the change to gun sales last year.
