Under contract
• The University of Utah received a contract worth more than $935,000 from the National Institutes of Health. The National Institute on Drug Abuse needs “state of the art” equipment to test for the presence of drugs — including marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, methadone, cocaine, anabolic steroids and benzodiazepines — in hair, urine, sweat and body tissues, such as from the brain, at very small levels. In order to handle the samples containing the illegal drugs, the contractor must be registered with the Drug Enforcement Agency. The goal is to “routinely research and modify existing methods to improve specificity and sensitivity for analyzing drugs,” according to documents.
• The Department of the Navy is spending $484,000 to rent a “double-hull” tanker that can carry at least 188,000 barrels of “clean petroleum products” from Minotaur Navigation Co., a company based in Greece, but the contracting address is located in Malta, a European island country off the coast of Italy. The tanker will carry the petroleum products from St. Theodore, Greece to Mersin, Turkey later this month.
{mosads}• There are historic bronze doors in Peoria, Ill., that need restoration, according to the General Services Administration. The agency awarded an $84,750 contract for the work to CSOS Inc., a historic preservation company in Illinois that specializes in laser cleaning. The Peoria Federal Building has “multiple” doors that have been poorly refinished in the past, according to documents, and need to be restored to their “original condition and finish.”
• The Defense Department awarded five contracts worth a total of more than $341,000 to various companies that specialize in handling and disposing of animal fat and bones. The companies, located throughout the United States, will pick up “supermarket animal and fish by-products, fats and bones, chicken, pork, beef, lunch meat, fish and sausages” from 18 military bases around the country.
