Under Contract
• The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awarded a $496,400 contract to the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House in Bismark, N.D., which provides temporary, transitional and low-cost housing to homeless and low-income individuals and families. The VA will refer “homeless, including mentally ill and or chemically dependent veterans” to the facility — named after the first female lieutenant governor of North Dakota. Veterans will be provided with a place to live, meals and, if needed, support to recover from illness or addiction, among other services.
• The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is spending more than $211,000 to replace “intrusion detection system equipment” at several of its facilities, after learning that the alarm systems they had in place were “no longer supported” by the Federal Protective Service monitoring centers, according to a contract document. “While the alarms still function, NRC cannot add new users or delete terminated personnel,” the document says. “This leaves the NRC unable to provide access to new employees/users and leaves the NRC vulnerable to terminated employees gaining access to the various NRC facilities.” Maryland-based company Alarm Security Group — also known as ASG Security — won the contract.

However, it is unclear how many NASA acquired from the manufacturer, Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, which has the proprietary software for the HPV-X high-speed cameras that allow for the high speed video to be recorded continuously at a high resolution
• The United States Marine Corps is investing more than $5.9 million to develop and create advanced “next-generation” body armor for soldiers. Protect The Force, a consulting firm and subsidiary of Mission Ready Services, won the contract to carry out the research and development of the product. According to a release by the company, about $1.5 million will be used for the product planning and research, with more than $4.4 million in potential additional funding from the Marines — though it does not have to utilize that option.
