Under Contract

• The Smithsonian Institution inked a $203,851 contract with Conservation Solutions Inc. to take care of “specialized cleaning of rare aircraft and spacecraft” in the National Air and Space Museum’s Virginia location. The museum displays 112 rare aircrafts, some of which are suspended from the ceiling. Workers should be able to “work safely at high levels,” because the ceiling reaches as high as 100 feet. The contract lasts one year, with four options to renew. The contractor must clean the suspended aircrafts before the museum opens while aircraft on the floor can be cleaned until 3:30 p.m.

• The Bureau of Prisons within the Justice Department is investing about $3.3 million in drug abuse and mental health treatment in San Diego. Sharper Future won the multi-year contract for the services, which the agency must offer under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. The contractor will provide counseling for those struggling with mental health issues or drug abuse, among other services. The counseling will be directed toward inmates who live in a residential re-entry center or are under house arrest.

• VS Visual Statement Inc. is providing the Department of Transportation with software that can reconstruct auto accidents in both 2-D and 3-D models. The contract is worth nearly $53,000. “Procurement of this software will ensure that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigators continue to exhibit state of the art methodologies with state of the art technologies while leading the way in crash reconstruction.” It is part of an effort to modernize the agency’s systems “to improve data quality, timeliness, and accessibility in responding to the rapidly changing vehicle and highway safety environment.”

• The State Department reportedly paid $110,000 to purchase and ship 50 “high-security” paper shredders to the European Logistics Support Office in Belgium. The shredders, provided by Whitaker Brothers, must be able to take on at least 10 sheets at a time and cross-cut documents to 1 millimeter by 5 millimeters or less.
