Under Contract

• The Army is spending more than $337,800 for a survey on the population of the northern long-eared bat surrounding the Fort Drum compound in New York. The bat has been proposed for listing on the federal endangered or threatened species list. Copperhead Consulting, the environmental research firm that won the contract, will also be surveying for “the federally-endangered Indiana bat, little brown bat, big brown bat, eastern small-footed bat, and silver-haired bat using mist netting and radio telemetry techniques to determine the presence, locations, and extent of use of roosts by bats,” according to contract documents. 

• The Oregon Army National Guard has contracted with Laser Shot, Inc. to provide seven “portable simulated shooting ranges.” The company’s website says the “system brings all the capability of a small arms training simulator to the user in a portable platform” and has a range of game options, including big and small game hunting and marksmanship training. The contract is worth nearly $61,000. 

• The Oregon National Guard has also commissioned 405 custom-made football jerseys, and High Impact won the $14,060 contract to provide them. They will be either a camouflage pattern or a mix of black and camouflage. 

• The Marine Corps inked a $100,000 contract with Karing Kennels — a grooming and pet-boarding facility in Okinawa, Japan — to feed and house stray animals that the Marines’ animal control unit “picks up from time to time in the performance of their duties,” according to the contract documents. The contract was issued by the Marine Corps Base in Camp Smedley D. Butler, located in Okinawa, and only covers the cost of housing the animals for a three-day period. It also includes “veterinary service support for microchipping and vaccinations as well as to support the adoption program. All costs for housing a healthy animal after the initial three-day period will be the responsibility of the contractor until the animal is either adopted or euthanized,” the documents say.
