• REGULATIONS. Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., the maker of several low-carb products, hired lobbying and PR firm MWW Group to help shape a revamp of federal nutrition guidelines. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services are in the midst of drafting the 2015 dietary guidelines, which will likely be completed in December. The two agencies update the standards every five years in an effort to provide recommendations on what individuals should be consuming to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.
• The Federal Trade Commission is reviewing its eyeglass rule, which requires doctors to give patients their eyeglass prescription immediately following an eye exam. Online retailer Warby Parker, which has a few showrooms nationwide, hired law and lobby firm Arnold & Porter to comment on the rule review.
{mosads}• ENERGY. 38 North Solutions is lobbying for Tesla Motors, the electric car manufacturer founded in part by Elon Musk. The company plans to lobby the federal government about “energy policy for energy storage and automotive industries,” according to disclosure forms recently filed to the Senate. Earlier this year, Tesla developed a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that could be used to power homes. The Tesla Powerwall stores energy absorbed from solar panels and uses it to provide power after the sun goes down.
• TRANSPORTATION. Though not a lobbying contract, former Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater, now at K Street heavyweight Squire Patton Boggs, has been selected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to make sure that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles complies with a $105 million consent decree. The agreement came after 23 different recalls by the company. Slater will be reviewing Chrysler’s safety plans. He will be a part of joint meetings with the company and NHTSA to discuss the progress.
