Under Contract
• The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded a $31.9 million contract to a subsidiary of international development firm Tetra Tech called ARD Inc. The contractors will assist with a project in Indonesia to improve the “conservation and sustainable use of marine resources by reforming fisheries management and promoting marine protected areas to enhance fisheries productivity, food and nutrition security … and strengthening the leadership role and capacity of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and local governments to promote conservation and sustainable fishing.” USAID wants to get public and private sectors involved, including fishers and Indonesian citizens.
{mosads}• The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is giving officials a crash course in “defensive and evasive driving” techniques at the Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia — about a two-hour drive from the DEA’s training academy in Quantico, Va. There will be two sets of two-day classes, costing a grand total of $51,800, which includes an instructor fee, course materials, classroom rentals, driver training vehicles, operable rentals, improvised explosive device simulators and driving facility rentals.
• The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located on the big island of Hawaii, will be creating a new exhibit that features a “life-sized footprints model” that recreates footprints of warriors, women and children who died in a series of explosive eruptions in 1790. The National Park Service awarded an $18,530 contract to Show Time Exhibitions to produce a 95-inch by 31-inch model with those footprints. Until recently, it was thought that only hundreds of warriors died in the explosions, but recent archaeological work around the site uncovered thousands of footprints from ordinary travelers who had been caught in the eruption. “This project’s overall goal is to restore the historic look of the [other] exhibits … and correct the earlier interpretive story.” It also will give visitors “a glimpse of what an actual footprint trackway looks and feels like.”
