Bottom Line

• DEFENSE. Hannegan Landau Poersch Advocacy is building an impressive client list. The firm, created last year, has signed up with General Dynamics Corporation to lobby on “appropriations defense issues,” according to lobbying disclosure records. Timothy Hannegan, formerly of the Government Accountability Office, is one of the lobbyists on the account. Other Hannegan clients include Wal-Mart, American Airlines, Comcast and the Managed Funds Association.

 • EDUCATION. Cardenas Partners has contracted with the University of Miami for “assisting the client in contacting the federal government and related agencies on issues pertaining to higher education.” Al Cardenas, a former chairman of the Florida Republican Party and chairman of the American Conservative Union, and Emily Zammit, once a legislative coordinator for Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), are among the lobbyists working for the school.

{mosads}• ENVIRONMENT. Dow Chemical has added to its sizable K Street roster by hiring Valente & Associates to lobby on energy and environment issues. The company will be getting help from Mark Valente, who served in the Reagan White House and once was director of congressional relations for the Office of Personnel Management, and Michael Bell, formerly a House Science Committee aide. Other lobby firms that represent the chemical giant include Holland & Knight and Washington Council Ernst & Young.

• TAX. The Philanthropy Roundtable has brought on Morgan, Lewis & Bockius to lobby on “tax reform.” Alexander Reid, a former legislation counsel for the Joint Committee on Taxation, will be representing the roundtable as lawmakers weight the future of the charitable deduction and other tax breaks. 

• TRANSPORTATION. Aerospace giant Boeing has secured the services of a former senior Democratic lawmaker on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The Jerry Costello Group, headed up by former Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Ill.), has signed up with the company to lobby on “manufacturing expansion.” Costello’s shop joins a stable of other lobby firms for Boeing, including Gephardt Group Government Affairs and McBee Strategic Consulting. Costello has also registered to lobby for Thompson-Coburn on behalf of Veolia Environmental Services.
