Jonathan Meyer, a former deputy general counsel at the Department of Homeland Security, has been named a partner at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton.
Squire Patton Boggs hired Lem O. Smith IV, the former director for U.S. government and regulatory affairs at Encana Oil & Gas. He will serve as a principal in the firm’s energy and environment public policy practice. He will work in Squire Patton’s Denver and Washington, D.C., offices.
{mosads}Chase Cannon, who most recently worked as a legislative director for Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), has joined the American Optometric Association to serve as legislative counsel and associate director of government relations.
Karen Billups rejoined Balch & Bingham, where she will work as a partner. Billups had a long career on Capitol Hill and most recently served as a staff director for Republicans on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. She first worked at Balch & Bingham from 1991 to 1993.
The George Washington Leadership Foundation, a PAC that is “dedicated to recruiting, training and electing Republican veterans to state and federal government office,” has named Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and Edward Rollins to its advisory board. Flynn, who held several high-level intelligence posts before retiring from the Army, is now also advising Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Rollins managed Ronald Reagan’s 1984 presidential campaign and now heads Great America PAC, a super PAC supporting Trump.
Anne Bradbury, a longtime Republican leadership aide, is departing Capitol Hill for K Street, joining Duberstein Group as a vice president. She worked for both Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and his predecessor, John Boehner (R-Ohio).
Kirkland & Ellis is bringing on a team of 17 attorneys from the firm Bancroft, including former U.S. solicitor general Paul Clement. The team of attorneys joining Kirkland on Oct. 1 includes Bancroft founder Viet Dinh, a former U.S. assistant attorney general for legal policy. The combined team argued 11 cases before the Supreme Court during its last term, comprising 15 percent of the overall docket. Clement has argued more Supreme Court cases since 2000 than any other lawyer, according to a release.
