Pack your knickers and your top hat
If Inaugural crowds aren’t your cup of tea — but political re-enactment is — the Loews Madison Hotel has just the thing for you. It has created a replica of the White House’s Lincoln Bedroom for guests who want to sleep like a president’s confidante.
“The Lincoln Bedroom commemorates Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial celebration and the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the country’s 44th President,” a statement from the hotel says. It is offering one-night packages between Jan. 10 and April 30 starting at $809. The special will not be available between Jan. 17 and Jan. 22, when the hotel is sold out for the Inauguration.
Takers on this package should know that this will not be a regular mini-bar raiding, cable-channel-flipping hotel stay. They can recline in a replica of Lincoln’s rocking chair while reading copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. They will also receive breakfast in bed, Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln and a set of towels that say, “I slept in the Lincoln Bedroom.”
Though the overall experience sounds quaint, potential guests who are easily excitable might consider this: Many an overnighter in the real Lincoln Bedroom has claimed to have seen ghosts.
