Q What is the highlight of your Fourth of July weekend

Rep. Albert Wynn (D-Md.): “The [Montgomery Village] parade. I love seeing the excitement and enthusiasm on the little kids’ faces.”

Rep. Dennis Moore (D-Kan.): “Walking in the Fourth of July parade in my hometown with my wife and grandkids.”

Rep. William Delahunt (D-Mass.): “Poetry reading in Hyannis, marching in a parade down Main Street in America’s hometown of Plymouth and then watching the Boston Pops concert.”

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.): “On Monday night, the Central Massachusetts Symphony will perform in East Park in Worcester, followed by fireworks. It’s a great event every year, and my kids love it.”

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.): “On Saturday, I will meet with a group of pre-college students to encourage them to pursue a college education in order to gain the skills, knowledge and wisdom to achieve the American dream.”

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.): “My personal highlight will be a family reunion. My highlight as the representative of the 6th District of Maryland will be my 14th consecutive year attending the Antietam National Battlefield annual Salute to Independence with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. It is always held the Saturday evening before July Fourth. … I’ve never missed it. It always brings chills to commemorate our nation’s birthday, where more Americans were killed or injured in one day than any other.” 

Rep. Tom Allen (D-Maine): “Like their fellow citizens from coast to coast, Maine people commemorate Independence Day with parades, picnics, flag-raising ceremonies, tributes to our veterans and the men and women of our armed forces and, of course, fireworks. I will be participating in a variety of these events and also spending some time with my family.

“You can also count on many Mainers to celebrate the Fourth with a traditional New England clambake — lobsters, clams, mussels and sweet corn covered with seaweed and steamed in a pit.”

Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.): “I look forward to seeing family and friends and celebrating the birth of our nation.”

Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.): “Every year, I participate in Fourth of July celebration parades in a number of Maryland communities. This year, I am particularly looking forward to the six parades so that I can take the opportunity to thank the people of Maryland for their support during my time in the United States Senate.”

Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.): “I’ll be riding a horse in the opening parade for the Cody Stampede Rodeo. I’m looking forward to spending time with friends and family, attending barbecues and taking some time off at the cabin. For me, the Fourth of July is a great time to relax and get reconnected with the area where I grew up. I’ll be using the rest of the week to host town meetings in the area.”

Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.): “Rhythm and Booms, the largest fireworks display in the Midwest; the Flags of Freedom parade in Sun Prairie [Wis.]; and the Columbus [Wis.] Fourth of July parade.”

Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-Wyo.): “I’m looking forward to heading west and traveling around Wyoming [this week]. I’ll celebrate the Fourth with a parade and night rodeo in Cody. I’ll be in one of the most beautiful places in America with my friends and family. I can’t ask for much more.”

Sen. Mike B. Enzi (R-Wyo.): “I will be in Gillette, Wyoming, for July 4. The day starts off with a pancake feed put on by the local firefighters, followed by a water fight with huge hoses, mud volleyball and a hot-dog feed. The day is topped off with an amazing fireworks show. Gillette has a great celebration every year, which is a great way to highlight the birth of our nation.”

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.): “I honor our nation’s birthday by crisscrossing the Maryland 2nd District, walking in Fourth of July parades during the day and kicking back and watching fireworks with my family at night.”

Rep. Mike Sodrel (R-Ind.): “The highlight of my Independence Day weekend would be [marching in] the Pekin Independence Day parade in Pekin, Ind. It is billed as the oldest consecutive Fourth of July celebration in the U.S.A. and is celebrating its 176th anniversary this year.

“If Norman Rockwell’s America exists anywhere today, it has to be in the 9th District of Indiana. There is nothing that I can think of that is more Americana and Rockwellesque than the Independence Day parade in Pekin.”
