What’s your favorite holiday movie?
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.): “‘Yankee Doodle Dandy.’ I’ve just been watching it ever since I was a kid. James Cagney is a great song and dance man,” said Cohen, while jumping up and clicking his heels to the side.
Rep. Timothy Johnson (R-Ill.): “‘A Christmas Story.’ I like it because of nostalgia. It makes me think about what it was like growing up many years ago.” [The movie is about a boy’s quest to get a BB gun for Christmas.]
Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.): “I don’t like to answer these questions. I like to keep those choices private.”
Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii): “‘Miracle on 34th Street.’ I play it for myself every year. [It’s] my sentimental favorite. I identify with Edmund Gwenn,” said Abercrombie, motioning to his beard. [Edmund Gwenn plays Kris Kringle in the movie.]
Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.): “I like different ones, from Chevy Chase’s ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ to ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’; everything ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime.”
Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.): “Is ‘The Graduate’ a holiday movie? My wife likes ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ and I never contradict my wife.” When asked if he likes “Frosty the Snowman,” McCotter replied: “I find as the years go by I’m less fond of it.”
Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.): “What’s the one they play around Easter every year? The one with Christ and the disciples? They play it every year. Charlton Heston plays Christ,” said Ruppersberger, who added after failing to remember the name of the film: “You don’t have a lot of time for movies in politics.” [Charlton Heston played John the Baptist in “The Greatest Story Ever Told” and Moses in “The Ten Commandments,” a perennial Easter favorite.]
Rep. David Hobson (R-Ohio): “I’m not a movie guy. ‘Miracle on 34th Street.’ I’m going to New York this weekend. I always enjoy going to New York at Christmas time. New York just decks itself out. When did that come out, the ’50s? You see, I’m an old guy.” [‘Miracle on 34th Street’ premiered in 1947.]
