Beauprez’s new aide attends graduate school at night

Dustin Carnevale, 24, is Rep. Bob Beauprez’s (R-Colo.) new staff assistant.

Carnevale is a 2005 Colorado State University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in political science. Until this past May, he interned for Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.).

Carnevale came to Washington to pursue a master’s degree in public policy at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management. He began working on Capitol Hill to jump-start his political career and networking.

As Beauprez’s staff assistant, Carnevale is responsible for scheduling, tour coordination, writing letters, constituent response and, he said jokingly, keeping his intern in line.

Carnevale said his master’s coursework is demanding, but when not on the grind he enjoys the nightlife on Capitol Hill.

Upon earning his master’s, Carnevale said, he wants to continue working in politics, specifically in the “strategy and message campaign side of things.”

In other Beauprez office movies, Kate Cheesbrough, 24, was promoted to legislative correspondent. She had been the congressman’s staff assistant.

“I was originally just supposed to come here for an internship, but they offered me the staff-assistant job instead,” Cheesbrough said.

Cheesbrough, hailing from Denver, graduated from Colorado State University in 2005 with degrees in economics and journalism.

As legislative correspondent, Cheesbrough is responsible for managing all incoming electronic and hard mail.

For Cheesbrough, working on the Hill brings great opportunity.

“This city has such an energy to it; it can be quite intoxicating at times,” Cheesbrough said.

She enjoys exploring D.C.’s many sights on the weekends, though she did say life is a bit slower without a car.

“I just visited the Portrait Gallery, and I’ll definitely be going back here,” Cheesbrough said, adding that she recently got to attend a private tour there for congressional staff.

Working in D.C. a dream for Hefley aide
Rachel Wyatt, 24, is taking over as legislative correspondent in the office of Rep. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.). A native of Norman, Okla., Wyatt is a 2004 University of Texas at Austin graduate with a bachelor of arts in government business.

“I manage and write all constituent mail, manage two interns and coordinate all the [Capitol] tours,” she says.

Wyatt is no stranger to Washington. She interned with the Department of Agriculture during college and with then-Sen. Don Nickles (R-Okla.) in 2004.

After graduation, Wyatt was a professional-education coordinator for East Central University in Ada, Okla., and then a coordinator and lobbyist for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Association of Realtors.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to live and work in Washington, D.C.,” Wyatt said. “In April I decided it was time to move up here.”

Wyatt enjoys visiting museums, going shopping in Eastern Market and fixing up her home in Arlington. Wyatt also enjoys softball and would love to play in the Congressional Softball League.
