Intern of the week: Kelley Huemoeller
Kelley Huemoeller, 22, has been an intern for Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) since late August. Considering her Western upbringing — Huemoeller was born in Cheyenne — Craig’s office was a natural choice.
“It’s good to support something that you have compassion for,” Huemoeller said.
She has a part-time job and is studying to become a lawyer while she interns for the senator. Huemoeller isn’t entirely sure about her future plans, but she isn’t that interested in taking over for the senator anytime soon.
“It seems to be a lot to handle if you are a senator,” she said. “But then again, who wouldn’t want to be loved by your whole state?”
Huemoeller says that her favorite experience since she began her internship was attending the Senate swearing-in ceremony.
“I was calling all my friends when I found out. It was really fun. I even got to see Bill Clinton,” she said with a big smile.
During this past election cycle she got the chance to do something not many interns get to do: She went campaigning in Wyoming. In the middle of a blizzard, Huemoeller and others went door to door to ask if they could put up signs.
“This was the hardest thing I’ve done since I started to work at the office,” Huemoeller said.
To be back in her state was nice, she added, explaining that Wyoming is where she wants to raise her children someday. For now she’s content to remain in Washington working for Thomas.
“It is amazing to see how much your senator actually does for your state,” she said.
