• Assault with a dangerous weapon — knife: Sept. 4 — Shortly after noon on this Saturday, a police officer noticed a 27-year-old man attempting to enter the Library of Congress’s main doors, which are permanently closed to the public. But when police informed the man of this closure, he “became disorderly” and started “behaving suspiciously,” according to police reports. The officer asked the man for identification and whether he was carrying any dangerous weapons, at which point the man allegedly pulled out a closed silver buck knife from his pocket. The officer ordered him to drop the knife, according to reports, but the man pulled open the knife’s blade instead, pointing it at the officer. After several verbal warnings, the man dropped the knife. He was arrested and processed at Capitol Police headquarters.
{mosads}• Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute: Sept. 5 — A Capitol Police officer was conducting a routine traffic stop several blocks south of the Capitol at approximately 6:30 p.m. on this Sunday when he noticed a driver not wearing his seatbelt. When the officer approached the red 1995 pickup truck, he noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car as well as an open container of beer, according to police reports. A further search of the vehicle, driven by a 27-year-old man, revealed a hand-rolled cigarette, a bucket “containing a large quantity” of marijuana and a digital scale, according to the reports. The man was arrested and taken to Capitol Police headquarters for processing.
• Assault on a police officer: Sept. 10 — At approximately 7 p.m. on this Friday, Capitol Police officers approached a 32-year-old man near the Lower Senate Park whom they claimed was acting in a disorderly manner. When the man refused to comply with officers’ demands that he stop being disorderly, police officers attempted to place handcuffs on the man “for officer safety,” according to reports. But the man broke free of the officers’ grip and ran for several blocks before police caught him again, at which time the man allegedly struggled more with police, injuring one officer in the process. The man was arrested and taken to Capitol Police headquarters..
• Possession of marijuana: Sept. 19 — A Capitol Police officer saw several people sitting in the Japanese Memorial, near the Lower Senate Park, on this Sunday at approximately 10 p.m. When the officer approached the group, he smelled “a strong odor of marijuana in the area,” according to police reports. The officer asked one of the individuals, a 52-year-old man wearing a black hat, if he had any illegal drugs on his person. The man replied that he had two hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes and a white plastic bag containing marijuana. The man was arrested and processed at Capitol Police headquarters.
