Capitol Police Files: December 8, 2010

Possession of cocaine — Oct. 31 — At about 6 p.m. on Halloween, a U.S. Capitol Police officer saw a woman drive through a red light one block east of the Library of Congress. During a subsequent traffic stop, the officer smelled alcohol on the woman, and conducted several field sobriety tests, which she did not pass, according to police reports. The woman, 49, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, and as the officer was searching the woman’s belongings, he found “several pieces of white rock-like substance” in her purse, according to reports. The substance tested positive for cocaine, police said.

Assault — Nov. 6 — At around 1:30 a.m., Capitol Police responded to a report of an assault in progress near the Lower Senate Park. When they arrived, police found a 40-year-old male complainant holding an 18-year-old man, who, according to the complainant, had hit him in the face. After seeing several facial injuries on the older man, police arrested the younger man and took him to police headquarters.

{mosads}Possession of cocaine — Nov. 10 — At around 7 p.m., a Capitol Police officer saw an abandoned black Toyota pickup truck about a half-block away from police headquarters, near the Senate office buildings. The car was running, and the driver’s door was open. When the officer approached, a 51-year-old man jumped into the driver’s seat and tried to drive away, closing the door on the officer’s arm, police said. The officer stopped the man from driving away. But the man, whose eyes were watery and bloodshot, became combative. The police officer removed him from the vehicle and handcuffed him, according to reports. The man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs. Police said the vehicle also contained vials of marijuana, cocaine and PCP, as well as 38 empty plastic bags.

Unlawful conduct  — Nov. 17 — Capitol Police responded to the Russell Senate Office Building for a disturbance call at about 7 p.m. According to police reports, two men and two women, ranging in age from 19 to 27, attempted to get a meeting with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to talk to him about supporting the DREAM Act. After the four people left his second-floor office, they sat in the middle of the hallway, refusing to leave, with their backs to each other. Capitol Police asked them to leave several times, and when they continued to refuse, police arrested them.

Destruction of property  — Nov. 22 — Just after midnight, a Capitol Police officer responded to a call that a man’s car had been damaged near the Library of Congress’s Adams Building. When the officer arrived, a 48-year-old cab driver said a man wearing a gray jacket and tan pants had kicked a large dent in the side of his car. A description of the man was broadcast on the police radio and police picked up someone fitting that description a short while later. The taxi driver and another witness positively identified the man, 32, and he was arrested and taken to Capitol Police headquarters.
