President Obama paints a bicep, first lady michelle 
gets serenaded, and Jill Biden donates her coats

President Obama on Monday painted a flexing bicep muscle on a dancing apple. And he colored it yellow.

The presidential art project took place at Stuart Hobson Middle School in Washington, where Obama and his family participated in a community service project as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

{mosads}One of the tasks that volunteers undertook was to paint dancing fruit on concrete pillars in the school’s cafeteria, with the goal of encouraging students to eat fruits and vegetables. 

As the president painted the apple, he might have even scored points with his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, who has championed child nutrition programs and healthy eating. 

Mrs. Obama celebrated her 47th birthday on Monday, and the president joined other volunteers in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday.” 

The tune marked the second time in two days that the first lady’s birthday had been publicly sung about: On Sunday, congregants at the Metropolitan African Methodist Church augmented their hymns with a rendition of the birthday song for the first lady, who was in the pews along with the president and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia.

A few hours north of where the Obamas were painting on Monday, the vice president and wife Jill Biden participated in the Wilmington, Del., Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at the City Center at Nemours.

Service projects included on-the-go meal kit assembly for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, writing letters to service members and a winter clothing drive. 

According to an administration official, Jill Biden and other Biden family members brought several of their winter coats for the coat drive.
