Bob Schieffer’s 
bad hair day

CBS’s Bob Schieffer, after 20 years of hosting “Face the Nation,” has only one thing he’d change about his first show.

“I really needed a haircut,” he told ITK.

{mosads}“You sit there and you watch your hair go from brown to gray to white, and I guess I’m getting shorter haircuts now, because I don’t appear to have nearly as much hair as I did,” he joked.

Schieffer, who will be feted by colleagues and friends at the St. Regis Wednesday night, said that after all his experience, he’s having as much fun today as he did hosting that first show in 1991.

And the 74-year-old might work six days a week, but he has no plans of slowing down or of giving up on his dream of recording a country music album.

“I spend a lot of time in Nashville,” said Schieffer, who sings and plays in the band Honky Tonk Confidential, calling himself the “oldest aspiring artist” in the country-music capital.

He also fondly recalled Tim Russert, the late host of NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“Tim and I were very, very good friends. We used to sit next to each other at baseball games. Our tickets were next to each other’s. I really, really miss him. I learned a lot competing against him.

“You don’t have to hate the people you compete against, whether it’s football or television,” he added.

And while Wolf Blitzer once said CNN executives joked they should insure his beard, Schieffer doesn’t have any similar plans.

“I don’t think I have anything worth insuring,” he laughed. “I think I would put that money in the bank.”
