Boxing looking to be a TKO in DC

Washington is getting ready to rumble, and it could all be thanks to … Hillary Clinton. For real.

HBO World Championship Boxing will return to the District on Dec. 10 for the first time in 18 years as British junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan defends his belts against local contender Lamont Peterson.

{mosads}D.C.’s political clout played a large role in securing the event; at a recent press conference, Khan said he fell in love with the city during a visit last month to attend a dinner hosted by Secretary of State Clinton.

“We’re going to bring boxing back to Washington,” he promised.

Organizers are hopeful that Clinton and other members of official Washington will show up on fight night at Washington Convention Center, where a special section will be set aside for members of Congress.

Lawmakers who are big boxing fans include Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), but HBO Boxing chief Kerry Davis told The Hill that he has it on good authority that President Obama himself is a fight fan. Davis said he plans to reach out to the White House with an official ringside invitation.
