Senators recall their best Halloween costumes

It seems when it comes to planning a spooktacular outfit for Halloween, many of America’s senators are seriously slacking.

While Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) couldn’t come up with what his costume might be for the creepy occasion, he’s looking forward to warming up from any spine-chilling frights he might get this year. The junior senator plans on continuing a tradition of chowing down on chili with some longtime neighbors. He says either he or his wife, Gail, will hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.

{mosads}At least Sen. John Cornyn has a pretty good go-to (albeit not particularly creative) costume, wondering aloud, “How about a senator? Is that boring?”

Yes, indeed.

The Texas Republican may not be alone with his less-than-original garb. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) initially replied that he’d be suiting up as a senator for Halloween, before conceding, “I really don’t know. I haven’t thought about it, or what my kids are going to do, either.”

Luckily the lawmaker, 40, had little trouble coming up with his most memorable getup from years past, revealing, “I think in 1991, in the height of the first Kuwait-Iraq war, I dressed up as George H.W. Bush. My friends dressed up as Secret Service agents.”

Yet before analysts could contend that Rubio’s presidential ensemble points up an early ambition for the White House, the Tea Party favorite revised his Halloween tale, saying, “Actually, I dressed up as one of the Secret Service agents, if I recall correctly.”

Don’t worry, senator! ITK won’t be researching the Rubio costumes of yesteryear! (Rubio and The Washington Post have been going at it about the paper’s recent article, which questioned claims he has made about his family’s history.)

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is keeping any potential apparel plans under wraps, but the Capitol Hill veteran, 60, didn’t hesitate in recalling his best bewitching duds as a Yankees-loving 7-year-old: “Mickey Mantle … I idolized Mickey Mantle. That was my favorite ever.”

But as far as fantastic getups go, that of Sen. Kelly Ayotte may take the pumpkin-flavored cake. The New Hampshire Republican hasn’t figured out her guise for Monday, but after a long sigh she disclosed, almost begrudgingly, “The best costume I’ve ever done — OK — I went as a pink Power Ranger one year. As an adult.”

Go, go, Power Rangers! For the record, ITK is happy to accept any photographic evidence of Ayotte as a crime fighter drenched in pink.
