Gibbs finally signs up for Twitter account

On Tuesday, two days after he joined Twitter, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said he uses the microblogging service himself. 

Asked at his daily press briefing if he writes his own tweets, Gibbs responded, “Inexplicably, yes.

{mosads}“It’s been fascinating to watch just over the few days since I’ve joined it; I’ve enjoyed watching you all comment on women’s figure skating, ski jumping and all matter,” he said. “There’s a tremendous amount of information we all get and have to read through each day.”

Gibbs cleared up a mystery surrounding many Twitter accounts of political figures: whether or not they tweet themselves, or if staffers do it for them. 

The press secretary established his account this weekend and has already gained over 21,000 followers.

Gibbs’s adoption of Twitter is a big turnaround from last summer, when he said the site was blocked on White House computers, a statement that was later clarified by deputy press secretary Bill Burton. 

Other White House officials on Twitter are Burton (@billburton44) and White House director of new media Macon Phillips (@macon44).

Phillips took up Twitter this month, while Burton made his first tweet in January after leaving his account dormant for over a month.
