These former members of Congress have issues
Former Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.), who lost his seat in 2006 to now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D), learned Friday that will serve 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving.
{mosads}Former Texas Democratic Rep. Craig Washington (1989-1995) filed suit against two teenagers he shot at earlier this year after they were trespassing in a Houston parking lot he owned.
Washington is suing each teen for $600,000, approximately the same amount the U.S. government is suing him for on account of back taxes.
In a much milder kerfuffle, a car that appears to belong to former Rep. Melissa Hart (R-Pa.), now a Pittsburgh-based lobbyist, was discovered in the Longworth parking garage. From the looks of it, the car may have been there for years. Hart lost her reelection bid in 2006, but there’s an abandoned, soot- and graffiti-covered white Volkswagen Jetta with her alma mater’s sticker, expired Pennsylvania tags and a 109th Congress parking pass on it. Hart has refused to say whether the car is hers.
Former members-turned-lobbyists are prohibited from using congressional parking garages.
