A car crash on a bridge near Ocean City, Md., injured eight people and ejected a 2-year-old into the bay below, authorities said in a press release Sunday

The Ocean City Fire Department said in the release that it was called to a “multiple casualty incident,” which was upgraded to a “rescue response,” on the Route 90 bridge. Authorities found multiple injuries and a car dangling over the guardrail at the scene.

The department said that a “Good Samaritan immediately jumped over the guardrail and into the bay, rescuing the infant.”

The “Good Samaritan” requested to remain anonymous at this time, the department said in a separate press release on Monday.

Authorities secured the vehicle and treated crash victims for their injuries. The infant was flown to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital, and seven others were taken to “various hospitals” via ground transport.

Senior Deputy Fire Marshal in Worcester County Rob Korb told CNN he came across the accident while he was running errands.

“The real hero in this situation is the Good Samaritan that jumped in to provide life saving measures for the infant. I’d like to shake his hand or buy him a beer or both someday,” Korb said.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident, the release said.
