  • Blue Origin is working on a commercial space station called “Orbital Reef.”
  • The company said the space station will be operated as a “mixed use business park” and is aiming to launch the station in the second half of the decade.
  • The station will reportedly be able to host up to 10 people and have about the same internal volume as the International Space Station.

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin on Monday announced plans to build a commercial space station for business and travel in low-Earth orbit.

Blue Origin said it is working with Boeing and Sierra Space, a spaceflight wing of defense contractor Sierra Nevada Corp, on a commercially developed, owned and operated space station known as “Orbital Reef.”

The company said the space station will be operated as a “mixed use business park” and is aiming to launch the station in the second half of the decade.

“Orbital Reef will provide anyone with the opportunity to establish their own address on orbit. This unique destination will offer research, industrial, international, and commercial customers the cost competitive end-to-end services they need including space transportation and logistics, space habitation, equipment accommodation, and operations including onboard crew,” the companies said in a statement

“Seasoned space agencies, high-tech consortia, sovereign nations without space programs, media and travel companies, funded entrepreneurs and sponsored inventors, and future-minded investors all have a place on Orbital Reef,” the companies said.

The station will be able to host up to 10 people and will have about the same internal volume as the International Space Station, according to CNN.

Blue Origin in July successfully carried out its first space tourism flight, launching Bezos and three others on a short journey to space in the company’s New Shepard spacecraft.

More recently, the New Shepard spacecraft carried former “Star Trek” actor William Shatner and three others 66 miles to the edge of space on a 10-minute flight.
