A 34-year-old man from California sacrificed himself in order to help a woman that was stranded on a zipline at the La Jolla Indian Reservation.
Joaquin Romero worked at the La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline on the La Jolla Indian Reservation. On Saturday, he was helping a woman get hooked to the platform when she began to slide out on the zip line. Romero was unable to stop her and ended up grabbing onto her harness, causing both of them to slide out even further, according to a witness.
Romero let go of the harness and fell about 70 feet below and suffered several blunt force injuries. The woman was not injured.
Romero was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead on Monday.

There are three zipline courses at the La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline which range from 300 to 2,700 feet in length. They can reach speeds up to 55 mph.
Normal Contreras, tribal chairwoman with the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians, told local news, “We are saddened and heart-broken over the recent tragic accident involving one of our employees at the La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline. The Tribe, Tribal officials, employees and Tribal members extend our sincere condolences to our employee and his family for their loss.”
Contreras went on to say that the Tribe would conduct an investigation into the incident, in coordination with federal and state authorities.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Romero’s funeral service and to support his young child. The fund had a goal to raise $20,000, but has surpassed that. Over $24,000 was donated within 24 hours of the fund being set up.
