The Rock and George Clooney join John Krasinski in return of ‘Some Good News’

Story at a glance

  • Actor John Krasinski started a YouTube series at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.
  • In each weekly episode, Krasinski speaks with entertainers and others to share good and positive news.
  • Following a hiatus beginning May, the show released a “Holiday Special with Dwayne Johnson.”

As the coronavirus outbreak turned into a pandemic, cases were spreading like wildfire across the country and Americans suddenly found themselves confronting a new reality in quarantine, John Krasinski just wanted some good news.

After an outpouring of replies, the actor known for playing Jim in “The Office” was inspired to start his own show, inviting Steve Carell to mark the 15th anniversary of the show.

“I thought enough is enough. Why not us world? Why not now? So, ladies and gentlemen, this is your fault, and this is SGN. I’m John Krasinski, and if it isn’t clear yet, I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing,” said the host in the first episode.

Over seven episodes, Krasinski spoke to the cast of Hamilton, Billie Eilish, the Jonas Brothers, Chance the Rapper, Oprah, Martha Stewart, Guy Fieri and others. But perhaps the most significant guests were the average Americans, from children to frontline workers, making a difference during the pandemic.

But like all good things, the Good News Show came to an end in May and the “Jack Ryan” actor had to get back to work. So Krasinski sold the idea to CBS, reportedly after a massive bidding war, staying on as executive producer but not as host.

Not all of his fans were thrilled and some accused him of selling out.

“It was one of those things where I was only planning on doing eight of them during quarantine, because I have these other things that I’m going to be having to do very soon—like Jack Ryan and all this other stuff,” Krasinski said on Instagram Live. “More than that, the writing, directing, and producing, all those things, with a couple of my friends was so much. I knew it wouldn’t be sustainable with my prior commitments.”

But Krasinski couldn’t stay away for too long. On Dec. 20, he released a holiday special featuring weather from George Clooney, a message from Justin Timberlake, as well as Dwayne Johnson as “Dwanta Claus.” The episode highlighted news of good deeds shared by users on social media with the hashtag “Some Good News,” as well as a thank you to essential and frontline workers and a special surprise for Jay Abel, a widowed father who was selling his own collectibles to buy his children Christmas presents.

Dwanta Claus came to town in time to keep Abel from parting with his possessions and get his children the presents on their wish lists.
