One day after more than 9,000 new coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles, several news outlets reported that the Grammy Awards would be postponed over public health concerns.
Rolling Stone, which first reported the news, and The New York Times cited unnamed sources who said organizers were hoping to reschedule for March, but no official date has been confirmed. The announcement comes just weeks before the ceremony was scheduled to be held with a limited audience at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, where Mayor Eric Garcetti predicted the “darkest month” of the pandemic to come.

In addition to rising case counts, more and more COVID-19 patients are filling up hospitals just as the city’s health care system struggles to distribute the coronavirus vaccine. While the Grammy Awards were to be held with only presenters and performers on-site, even the smallest gatherings in Los Angeles are restricted to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.
The Grammys haven’t been held in March since 1995. Just last year, the Recording Academy moved the award ceremony one week ahead of the Super Bowl instead of later in February after the Oscars were moved up as well — all weeks before the nation would shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
