Man sets off massive explosives for gender reveal party, triggering earthquake reports

Story at a glance

  • A gender reveal in New Hampshire set off explosives so strong it resulted in earthquake reports from confused residents.
  • The explosion was even reported to be felt over the state line in nearby Massachusetts.
  • The stunt comes amid a recent series of gender reveals gone awry, even resulting in deaths.

A gender reveal party in New Hampshire utilized such a large quantity of explosives that it led residents to report what they thought was an earthquake, even crossing state lines.

Officers from the Kingston Police Department responded to the Torromeo quarry after receiving multiple reports of a large explosion and possible earthquake. A group gathered at the quarry told police it had been a part of a gender reveal.

The source of the explosion was determined to be 80 pounds of Tannerite used in the reveal. The force of the explosion was so large that some over the nearby border of Massachusetts reported being rocked by it.

“We heard this God-awful blast,” said Sara Taglieri, who lives near the quarry. “It knocked pictures off our walls. … I’m all up for silliness and whatnot, but that was extreme.”

Police stated that the man who detonated the explosives turned himself in, and no injuries were reported.

The explosion comes on the heels of numerous gender reveals that went awry.

In March, a plane being used in a gender reveal in Mexico crashed, killing two people.

In February, a 26-year-old Michigan man was killed when a gender reveal using a cannon exploded, shooting shrapnel and impaling the victim.

Last October, a soon-to-be grandmother was also killed by shrapnel in Iowa when a pipe bomb was inadvertently created when attempting to set off a gender reveal explosion.

A California gender reveal ignited a wildfire that ultimately burned more than 21,000 acres and resulted in the death of a firefighter. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office is still reviewing evidence and hasn’t decided if it will pursue criminal charges in that case.
