Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani made history Monday, achieving a feat not seen in MLB in nearly 100 years.
Ohtani, who is tied for the major league lead with seven home runs, became the first home run leader to start a game on the pitcher’s mound since Babe Ruth’s New York Yankees squared off against Detroit in 1921.
Ohtani’s Monday matchup against the Texas Rangers marked the second time this season that he has both pitched and batted in the second spot in lineup, according to ESPN.

The right-handed pitcher struck out nine batters, while scoring three runs and driving in two. Los Angeles defeated the Rangers 9-4.
Ohtani initially gave up four runs before retiring 14 out of the final 15 batters he faced.
“I was able to drive in those two runs, that was huge for me, and we were able to tie the game up in the second inning,” Ohtani said through his translator, according to ESPN. “So it felt like a fresh start, I treated it like a brand new ballgame.”
Angels manager Joe Maddon said Ohtani’s performance was a “pretty complete game of baseball,” ESPN reported.
“If you weren’t entertained by watching him tonight, you can’t be entertained watching the game of baseball,” Maddon said.
