A 39-year-old woman was killed in a bear attack Friday while she was out walking her dogs, authorities said in a statement.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said that the woman’s boyfriend came home at 8:30 p.m. to find two dogs waiting outside. He searched for her and found her body around 9:30 before calling 911. The boyfriend had not communicated with the woman after late Friday morning.
CPW found “signs of consumption” on the body and other evidence of a bear attack at the scene. A dog team from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services discovered a female black bear and two yearlings close by. The bears were euthanized and taken to a lab for a necropsy where human remains were found inside the Black bear and her cub.

“Bear attacks are extremely rare,” said Cory Chick, CPW Southwest Region manager. “This is a tragic event and a sad reminder that bears are wild and potentially dangerous. Out of an abundance of caution, the bears were removed for public safety. We ask the public to report any encounter with an aggressive bear to CPW.”
This was the first fatal bear attack in Colorado since 2009.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the boyfriend, family and friends of the woman we lost in this tragic event,” Chick said according to 9 News. “We cannot determine with exact certainty how or why this attack took place, but it is important for the public not to cast blame on this woman for the unfortunate and tragic event.”
The La Plata County, Colo., coroner’s office is expected to conduct an autopsy on the woman on Tuesday, 9 News reported.
