Controversial TV and music star Donald Glover rips ‘cancel culture’

If you’ve muted the words “cancel culture” on Twitter, you might’ve missed Donald Glover’s first tweets since joining the social media platform in January 2009. The actor, rapper, comedian and more logged on for the first time since November, when he last replied to a few tweets, to join a discussion on “boring” tv and film.

“we’re getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes(?) because people are afraid of getting cancelled,” said Glover, who is also known by the stage name Childish Gambino.

While “getting cancelled” can trigger major feelings these days, it’s likely that the writer, director and producer was speaking in a more literal sense, as TV and film programming is often cancelled by studios before making it out of production. Glover said the fear of losing that backing can keep TV and film creators from taking risks and instead experimenting only with aesthetic.

“(also because some of em know theyre not that good),” he added, throwing shade at some in the industry. 

Others in the entertainment industry have called out studios for prioritizing making money over all other creative considerations. 

“The reality of our current situation is that the five families don’t want to make anything that can’t make them a billion dollars. None of them want to be in the medium-priced challenging content business. And that cleaves off exactly the kind of movies I make,” Academy Award-nominated director David Fincher told the Telegraph last year
