U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) member Carli Lloyd made sports history Sunday night, becoming the oldest player to score in a match for the team.

Lloyd’s goal came 24 seconds into the team’s Summer Series 4-0 victory over Jamaica. The win marks the USWNT’s 41st consecutive win and 55 straight on American soil.

“Records are records, they’re always going to be broken,” Lloyd said. “For me, it’s just about winning games, it’s helping the team. I don’t go searching for these records, it’s just a good reminder just to know how grateful I am to step out on the field. Nothing has ever been given to me. I’ve had to earn every single opportunity.”

The two-time Olympic gold medalist who has played in 303 USWNT matches, Lloyd set the record at the age of 38 years and 332 days. Her early goal was the second quickest since teammate Alex Morgan scored after 12 seconds in 2016.

Lindsey Horan, Midge Purce and Alex Morgan scored the remaining three goals in Sunday’s matchup.

Danielle Slaton, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist and NBC analyst, said last week that Lloyd not only has a good chance of making the upcoming Olympic team roster but also has a shot of being a member of the starting nine.

“I gotta say, six months ago at the start of January camp, I was like, ‘There’s no way that Carli Lloyd is making that Olympic roster,’” Slaton said. “And shame on me for betting against Carli Lloyd. It’s like betting against Tom Brady or LeBron James. You just don’t do it.”

The USWNT will square off against Nigeria on Wednesday.
