Billionaire Richard Branson ready to beat Jeff Bezos to space

Virgin Galactic CEO Richard Branson is elated as he prepares to blast into space days ahead of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos. 

Branson, who announced his plans last week, described on NBC’s “Today” show what it could be like once one of his dreams is realized, saying when he and his crew “become astronauts, I will pinch myself and pinch myself again and again.”

“I always envisioned as a kid that a spaceship should look like this,” Branson continued, as he revealed the spacecraft to NBC. “I just thought that that’s how you should fly to space.”

Branson confirmed he was prepared to launch ahead with Bezos after weeks of speculation. The Virgin Galactic crew will launch from New Mexico on July 11, nine days before Bezos joins his brother Mark and four others on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. But Branson told the outlet the widely discussed rivalry between the two billionaire CEO’s is nonexistent. 

“I know nobody will believe me when I say it, but honestly, there isn’t,” Branson said.

Virgin Galactic chief astronaut instructor Beth Moses, lead operations engineer Colin Bennett, and government affairs vice president Sirisha Bandla will join Branson on the flight. The company said that the test flight will be livestreamed on its website and various social media platforms beginning at 9 a.m. EDT on the day of the flight.
