Story at a glance

  • A new Carnival cruise ship is catering to thrill-seeking passengers with a roller coaster on board.
  • The ride sits above the ship’s 18th deck at around 187 feet above sea level.
  • Riders in motorcycle-like cars control their own speeds across the 800 foot track.

A Carnival cruise ship already decked out with a miniature golf course and athletic track encourages passengers to seek additional thrills aboard a roller coaster on deck.

Boasting an 800-foot track roughly 20 feet above the cruise liner’s 18th deck, Bolt allows riders to sit on motorcycle-styled cars where riders control their own speed, according to the New York Post. The groundbreaking ship first set sail July 31.

Attractions Magazine reported that Bolt, which is housed on the “Mardi Gras” cruise ship, does not operate like a traditional roller coaster. Throttles operated by riders can take the thrill seekers up to 40 miles per hour on the electricity powered ride sitting 187 feet above sea level.

The coaster’s pricing for the inaugural trip began at $15 per ride, and could go up to $25 after the special event according to Attractions Magazine. Riders must also dress in proper attire, empty their pockets and weigh less than 300 pounds. Reviewers at Attraction described the event as “fun, but over too soon.”

Meanwhile, a reviewer at The Points Guy noted the experience was “more exciting” than expected and would be a great ride for people who aren’t afraid of heights or carrying a need for speed.

“So, is it worth the $15 price tag? It’s not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer,” the reviewer wrote. “I likely wouldn’t pay it, but if you’re someone who likes the bragging rights that come with exclusive experiences or if you’ve got thrill-seeking kids, it might be money well spent.”
