Actor William Shatner will become the oldest person — at 90 years old — to fly to space when he boards Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket this month, Jeff Bezos’ space company announced Monday.
Shatner, best known for his role as Captain James T. Kirk on the hit science fiction series “Star Trek,” is set to join three others, including two paying travelers, on the Blue Origin Capsule Oct. 12 for a ten-minute flight.
“I’ve heard about space for a long time now. I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle,” Shatner said in the company’s news release.
“Yes, it’s true; I’m going to be a ‘rocket man!’” he added on Twitter.
Shatner would have become the first actor in space, but Russia is set to launch Actor Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko to the International Space Station to film portions of the movie “Challenge,” according to The Associated Press (AP).

Bezos is reportedly a fan of the classic Shatner’s classic sci-fi series and took part in a cameo for the 2016 film “Star Trek Beyond,” the AP noted. The former Amazon CEO joined his brother, Mark Bezos, and aerospace pioneer Wally Funk on the Inaugural flight in July. At the time, Funk was the oldest person to fly to space, but Shatner is set to break the mark by three years.
