Author Dave Eggers is taking the subject of his new novel, which is about the possible threats Big Tech poses, to heart by banning the initial run of his latest book from being sold on Amazon.

“I don’t like bullies,” Eggers told The New York Times.

Eggers, who is known for writing “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius,” released the hardcover version of his new novel, “The Every” on Tuesday. “The Every” is a follow-up to his 2013 novel “The Circle” — both satirical works examining Silicon Valley and the tech world.

Eggers said that the first run of “The Every” will only be available in independent bookstores and online through his publishing company, McSweeney’s. To motivate readers to patronize these independent bookstores, “The Every” will feature 32 different covers that will be randomly distributed to the stores.

“Amazon has been kicking sand in the face of independent bookstores for decades now,” Eggers said, motivating him to refrain from selling it through the tech conglomerate.

“One of the themes of the book is the power of monopolies to dictate our choices,” Eggers added, “so it seemed a good opportunity to push back a bit against the monopoly, Amazon, that currently rules the book world.”

However, “The Every” will still eventually be sold via Amazon next month when its paperback and ebook versions are released, though none will feature the exclusive hardcover covers.

Amazon has not returned a request for comment at this time.
