Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson turned around and began celebrating his game-winning field goal against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday before realizing he had missed.

The overtime kick appeared as a classic moment of redemption for the kicker who previously missed a game-altering field goal attempt with 26 seconds left in regulation. But the ball curved slightly at the last second, pushing it a hair to the left.

“Honestly, I was celebrating before the ball, I guess, curved to the left. But for me, what I saw is I struck it very well, and I saw it going right down the middle,” McPherson said.

“I guess you could say I know whenever it’s going to go in, and that was one of those moments, and so I was kind of celebrating with Kevin (Huber) when it hit a hard left. I couldn’t really tell you — maybe a big gust of wind caught it there at the last second. I struck it well. I’m upset about it, but there’s really nothing I can do about it now.”

McPherson has made five out eight field goal tries this season.

Packers kicker Mason Crosby experienced his own set up mishaps Sunday, missing three straight kicks after entering the game on a streak of 27 consecutive made field goals. Crosby ended his erratic performance by nailing the game winning kick.

“The fact that we kept getting opportunities, you’ve got to give it up to our team, the way we fought to get in that position again,” Crosby told reporters, according to ESPN. “And I just wanted so badly to come through there. I had a couple go bad there, and I’m just happy to hit that last one. There was a little bit of relief.”

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers summed up the wild finish succinctly following the match up, telling reporters “both teams tried to lose that game a few times.”
