Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg shocked the crowd at a youth climate summit over the weekend when she revitalized a popular internet meme — Rickrolling — on stage.
“We’re no stranger to love,” the 18-year-old Swedish climate icon told the crowd at Climate Live in Stockholm on Saturday, before singing and dancing to Rick Astley’s classic hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

Thunberg, who received a shoutout from Astley on Twitter, was joined on stage by Swedish activist Andreas Magnusson for the performance.

The pair’s routine departed from the activist’s typical style, which includes sharp criticism of world leaders for their “blah, blah, blah” statements regarding climate challenges.
“Net zero, blah, blah, blah. Climate neutral, blah, blah, blah,” Thunberg said at a youth summit last month. “This is all we hear from our so-called leaders — words, words that sound great but so far has led to no action or hopes and dreams. Empty words and promises.”
