Remains of the largest triceratops ever discovered sold at an auction on Thursday for around $7.74 million.
An anonymous buyer purchased the skeleton of the dinosaur dubbed “Big John” — believed to have roamed modern day South Dakota 66 million years ago — at the Drouot auction house Paris.

“It’s being acquired by an American collector, and that individual is absolutely thrilled with the idea of being able to bring a piece like this to his personal use,” said Djuan Rivers, a representative for the buyer, according to Reuters.
“The history behind this and the curation of it is absolutely impressive, so to be able to be a part of preserving something of this nature that was actually found in the U.S., in South Dakota, is also something extremely special,” Rivers added.

The dinosaur skeleton, which has a nearly 9-foot long skull, was discovered by geologist Walter W. Stein in 2014 and then taken to Italy for reconstruction, CNN reported.
Auctioneer Alexandre Giquello noted that the final sale price was the highest price ever paid for a dinosaur remains in Europe, Reuters noted. Initial projections estimated the skeleton would bring in around $1.74 million.
