Court records obtained by the outlet show the league has a program that assists retired players in paying for medical expenses of up to $350,000.
“Health care fraud of this nature contributes greatly to the inflated cost of health care in this country,” prosecutors wrote in court records obtained by the Herald-Reader. “It is incumbent upon the court to send a strong, clear message to the public that such a violation of the trust health care plans place in those they seek to help cannot and will not be tolerated.”
Eight players involved in the scheme, including Ceandris Brown and Carlos Rogers, have been sentenced thus far. McCune has pleaded guilty in the scheme.
