A New York criminal court on Thursday charged former Gov. Andrew Cuomo with a misdemeanor sex crime months after he resigned in disgrace following accusations of sexual harassment by multiple women.
Cuomo, 63, was charged with the Class A misdemeanor of forcible touching, according to a New York State courts spokesperson.
“A misdemeanor Complaint against former Governor Andrew Cuomo has been filed in Albany City Court,” Lucian Chalfen said in a statement. “As this is a sex crime, a redacted complaint will be available shortly.”
The alleged victim’s name was not provided and further details were unclear, but the allegation is reportedly related to a 2020 incident in which Cuomo groped an aide at his former residence, the Executive Mansion in Albany, the Daily Beast reported. Cuomo has denied that and other accusations of sexual misconduct, calling his actions “playful” and misunderstood, though he has acknowledged that he “may have been insensitive.”

If Cuomo is convicted he could be sentenced to up to a year in jail and will be unable to run for public office again, according to the New York State Unified Court System website.
Cuomo resigned from office in August, avoiding possible impeachment, after New York Attorney General Letitia James published a damning report on Cuomo’s alleged sexual harassment of at least 11 current and former state employees. The Associated Press on Wednesday reported that James plans to run for governor of New York.
At least five district attorney’s offices in New York are investigating sex crimes by Cuomo.
