Marjorie Taylor Greene fined almost $50k for defying mask mandate, vows to keep going

Story at a glance

  • The House Ethics Committee released a notice confirming Greene’s violation of the House mask mandate.
  • Greene has been an outspoken critic over the rule, saying it’s constitutional.
  • Greene also has an ongoing lawsuit against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi over the mask rule.

Georgia Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been fined $48,000 this year because of violating the House rule requiring all representatives to wear a mask while on the House floor.

The House Ethics Committee released a notice this week confirming Greene’s violation. The committee outlined at least three separate occasions that Greene had been fined for, most recently in late September. The congresswoman did not file an appeal in any of those incidents.

According to The New York Post, Greene has been seen without a mask in the House chamber at least 20 times since May. Greene’s spokesman also told The Post that she had been fined $500 in May for her first offense and then an additional $2,500 for every subsequent violation. In total, Greene has amassed $48,000 in fines for not wearing a mask.

Fines are typically deducted from Congressmembers’ pay of $174,000 annually, according to The Washington Post.

Greene told The Epoch Times that, “I will continue my stand on the House floor against authoritarian Democrat mandates, because I don’t want the American people to stand alone.”

Greene previously filed a lawsuit against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, joined by Republican Rep. Ralph Norman, arguing that the Speaker’s mask mandate for all House members is in violation of the 27th Amendment and that the fines being issued are unconstitutional. The lawsuit is still ongoing.

However, Greene isn’t the only member of Congress earning fines over the House’s mask mandate. Rep. Andrew Clyde, another Republican from Georgia, was also found in violation of the mask mandate on three separate occasions.
