Cumberbatch spoke with Esquire about his role as Montana rancher Phil Burbank, telling the magazine getting into character led him to smoking copious amounts of cigarettes — “perfectly rolled with one-hand.”
“That was really hard,” Cumberbatch said. “Filterless rollies, just take after take after take. I gave myself nicotine poisoning three times. When you have to smoke a lot, it genuinely is horrible.”
“The Power of the Dog” is director Jane Campion’s adaptation of a western novel by Thomas Savage.
The 45-year-old actor currently has three other movies set for release: “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.”

It has taken Cumberbatch a lot of work to get into character as Burbank, which meant Cumberbatch quit responding to his given name, according to Esquire. And it also led the British actor to attempt smelling like Burbank.
“I wanted that layer of stink on me. I wanted people in the room to know what I smelt like. It was hard, though. It wasn’t just in rehearsals. I was going out to eat and meet friends of Jane and stuff. I was a bit embarrassed by the cleaner, in the place I was living.”
