A nurse from Kentucky who worked on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic recently won $200,000 in a scratch-off lottery ticket the first day into her retirement.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, had worked as a nurse for 36 years including through the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. She was just hours into her first day of retirement when she realized she won the cash prize from a Kentucky Lottery scratch-off ticket, according to the Kentucky Lottery.
The nurse purchased a $10 Tree-Mendous Winnings scratch-off ticket at a Double Kwik, a local Kentucky shop attached to gas stations.
“It was unbelievable. I had just retired that day. I saw this as a sign it was meant to be for me to quit working,” the nurse said in a news release from the Kentucky Lottery.

The nurse drove to lottery headquarters in Louisville and has already received a check for $142,000 after taxes.
Kentucky is experiencing an average of 1,200 new COVID-19 cases daily, according to the Mayo Clinic and about 50 percent of the state’s population is vaccinated. The lottery-winning nurse told officials, “it’s been tough,” when describing her experience working over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.
