‘The Rolls Royce of turkeys’ on your Thanksgiving table will cost you more than $300 each

Story at a glance

  • KellyBronze sells turkeys it says are completely free range.
  • Turkeys are also twice the age of a standard turkey, which KellyBronze claims gives their turkeys much more flavor.
  • KellyBronze turkeys can cost upwards of $13 per pound.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and as inflation pushes prices for groceries higher, there’s one turkey that could be worth splurging on.

The KellyBronze variety of turkeys, described as the “Rolls-Royce” of turkeys by the Times of London, according to the New York Post, can cost upwards of $13 per pound. A large KellyBronze turkey could cost over $300.

KellyBronze turkeys can be found at select farms and markets across the U.S., mostly in the East Coast and with one retailer in Los Angeles. The concept of KellyBronze began in 1981 by a British family that set out to produce hand-reared and completely range free turkeys.

According to the Post, the KellyBronze brand has a loyal following in the U.K. and has received praise from celebrity chefs like Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver. The company sells over 50,000 birds from farms all over the country at Christmas time, when turkey is traditionally eaten in the U.K.

KellyBronze didn’t launch in the U.S. until 2017, when the company received its license to sell from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to the company’s website, KellyBronze allows its hens to naturally lay eggs, as opposed to an all-year-round production cycle. Hens lay their eggs for 10 weeks, which the company argues makes their products cost more than twice as much as a standard turkey.

Turkeys are also fed 30 percent more feed than a modern commercial turkey and are twice the age of a standard turkey. KellyBronze claims that, “maturity has the biggest single impact on flavour.”

One retailer offering KellyBronze turkeys in New York, Jake Dickson, owner of Dickson’s Farmstand, told the Post that, “They’re probably the best turkeys in the country, [they] have a deeper flavor. They’re pretty special.”

Consumers interested in trying a KellyBronze turkey can visit a local supplier or place an order on the company’s website. They currently sell turkeys for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
