Man dressed as ninja attacks, injures French police officers with sword

French police have apprehended a sword-wielding assailant after he attacked two female police officers Thursday who attempted to question him about a car theft. 

“While intervening in a vehicle theft in Cherbourg, two police officers were injured,” French Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin said on social media, according to CNN. “(My) support to the national police.” 

“All my support to the forces of order, Cherbourg mayor Arrivé Benoît added, per CNN.

Reuters reported the attack occurred around 3:45 p.m. after two police officers were called to the scene of an accident caused by the attacker who was in possession of a stolen vehicle. A spokeswoman said the attack was not believed to be related to terrorism based on immediate evidence, according to the outlet. 

Officers reportedly shot the man, whose name and nationality were unavailable, three times after he wounded one officer in the chin and the other in the face. The man was then flown to a hospital in serious condition.
