Embattled Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer was fired Thursday only 13 games into his first season and only hours after he was accused of kicking a player during a pre-season practice.
Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a statement released Thursday he was “bitterly disappointed to arrive at the conclusion that an immediate change is imperative for everyone.”
“I informed Urban of the change this evening. As I stated in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably, it did not happen, Khan said, following a video that showed Myer with a woman who isn’t his wife dancing close to his lap.
“In the spirit of closure and recharging our players, staff and fan base, I will not comment further until some point following the conclusion of the NFL season,” he continued.
Meyer’s 2-11 performance at the helm was riddled with controversy all the way to Wednesday when a report surfaced that he allegedly kicked kicker Josh Lambo in the leg during practice.
“I’m in a lunge position. Left leg forward, right leg back,” Lambo told The Tampa Bay Times. “Urban Meyer, while I’m in that stretch position, comes up to me and says, ‘Hey Dips–t, make your f–king kicks!’ And kicks me in the leg.”
Lambo said the kick would register at a five out of 10 but “in the workplace, I don’t care if it’s football or not, the boss can’t strike an employee. And for a second, I couldn’t believe it actually happened.”

Meyer told the Times Lambo’s characterization of both himself “and this incident is completely inaccurate, and there are eyewitnesses to refute his account.”
Assistant coach Darrell Bevell will serve as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.
