Star of two hit TV shows departs after investigation into ‘abusive’ misconduct

Story at a glance

  • Jeff Garlin was under an HR investigation for multiple misconduct allegations.
  • Garlin had publicly said he hoped a mutual agreement could be made and defended his actions on set as just silliness.
  • The 59-year-old comedian also serves as executive producer for HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Murray Goldberg won’t be returning to his TV family, as comedian Jeff Garlin reached an agreement with ABC to not return to “The Goldbergs.”

As first reported by Deadline, Garlin was under investigation by ABC’s HR department following multiple misconduct allegations against him. One employee told Deadline that Garlin was “extremely verbally and emotionally abusive.”

It is believed that 59-year-old Garlin reached an agreement with the TV network and will not be returning to “The Goldbergs” set, effective immediately. He had one more day of shooting left for the current season, which consists of 18 episodes.

“The Goldbergs” premiered for the first time in 2013 and is currently on its ninth season, and with Garlin’s departure it’s not clear if the show will continue into a 10th season.

Just a few weeks ago Garlin sat down with Vanity Fair and discussed his on set troubles with the TV show saying that, “no I was not fired from ‘The Goldbergs.’ I have not been fired from ‘The Goldbergs’.”

Garlin went on to explain his differences with the TV network, saying the two parties had “a difference of opinion.” Garlin defended his workplace antics saying they were silly and not meant to cause an unsafe workspace.

Garlin also said that as a comedian if someone is offended for what he says, all he can do is apologize. “So if someone is upset that I say something nonsensical that has dirty words in it, I apologize… by the way, HR could come to me and go, ‘here’s the reason why they don’t want you to go say this or talk this way.’”

Garlin admitted that HR came to him and addressed his “silliness on set,” as he described it. He told Vanity Fair that he hoped the two parties could come to an agreement, but vehemently denied being fired.

It seems as though that agreement has been reached.

Concurrently with his role on “The Goldbergs,” Garlin also acts as executive producer for HBO’s show “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and it’s not clear if his departure from ABC will affect that job.
