Elon Musk poured cold water over Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s new virtual reality product, saying the metaverse didn’t seem very compelling.
In an interview with conservative satire site The Babylon Bee Tuesday, Musk said the concept of Facebook’s metaverse, which was first introduced back in October and focuses on augmented virtual reality (VR) experiences, was more hype than substance.
Musk described the headsets used when participating in the metaverse as uncomfortable and that “it doesn’t feel like that’s the answer necessarily.”
Musk also said he didn’t see the viability of the metaverse, saying “I don’t see someone strapping a frigging screen to their face all day and not wanting to ever leave.”

“This just sounds kind of buzzword-y,” Musk said.
Zuckerberg first publicly introduced his company’s VR product Horizon Workrooms in August on “CBS This Morning.” Zuckerberg described it as the next generation of the internet.
“So you can kind of think about it as, instead of being an internet that we look at, right, on our mobile phones or computer screens, it’s an internet that we are a part of, or that we can be inside of,” Zuckerberg said.
Discussing other internet trends, Musk also commented on a tech concept called Web3. It’s an idea that hopes to decentralize the internet to empower individual users through blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. Proponents of Web3 believe it could reduce the power and influence of tech giants like Meta and Google.
On Web3, Musk said it seemed like “more marketing than reality.”
Musk, 50, is the founder and CEO of space company SpaceX and of electric car manufacturer Tesla. He was recently selected as Time Magazine’s 2021 Person of the Year.
