A man who paid thousands of dollars to have someone change his daughter’s college ACT exam answers was handed a two-month jail sentence Thursday.
Mark Hauser, who was part of the scandal involving actor Lori Laughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, told the court he was acting in the interest of his daughter who had struggled with medical issues, The Associated Press reported. Hauser paid the scheme’s leader, Rick Singer, $40,000 to have someone doctor his daughter’s exam.
“I know medical challenges are not an excuse,” Hauser said during the hearing in Boston. “I was in a really bad place with her struggles. I was not trying to establish prestige for myself or for my daughter. My only concern was to help her catch her breath.”

Giannulli served a five-month sentence for paying $500,000 to get his daughters into the University of Southern California. Meanwhile, Loughlin served a two-month stint for her role in the scandal.
Hauser, who owns a private equity firm, gave the money to Singer who then orchestrated a scheme where he had a man pretend to be a test proctor, according to the AP. Mark Riddell, the faux proctor, corrected Hauser’s daughter’s answers, which took her score from 31 to a perfect 36.
Hauser, who was also fined $250,000 for his role in the scandal, pleaded guilty in 2020 to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, the AP reported. Hauser is one of 57 people charged in the admissions scandal.
